Is NEBOSH IGC enough for offshore HSE jobs?
Offshore employers in Dubai, Norway, the North Sea and the UK increasingly
ask for a NEBOSH IGC certificate as the minimum for HSE roles.
With only a national qualification you often won't even pass the first screening — with
NEBOSH an international market literally opens up for you.
- Recognised in 120+ countries
- Higher contractor day rate: often €1,000–€1,500/day offshore
- Suitable for offshore wind, oil & gas and maritime projects
- English-taught course in Rotterdam — English exam
NEBOSH IGC is usually the baseline, not the full ticket: most operators also expect
offshore survival training, a valid medical and relevant site experience.
Our NEBOSH IGC course in the Netherlands costs
€3,500 all-in and is built for international HSE professionals and expats who want to
work offshore or internationally.
NEBOSH offshore salaries and contractor day rates (2026)
Exact rates depend on your experience, project type and region.
But based on market information for 2026, the rough pattern looks like this:
- European ports / NL springboard roles: ± €400–€800/day as an HSE contractor
- Offshore North Sea / Norway / UK: ± €900–€1,200/day
- Dubai & Middle East: ± €1,000–€1,500/day (often tax-free, sometimes incl. housing and flights)
Across offshore HSE contracting, day rates commonly sit in the
€500–€1,500 band. Work a few months a year offshore and an
annual income above €100,000 as an HSE contractor is realistic —
provided you have the right certifications and are willing to work abroad (temporarily).

Offshore opportunities: Dubai, Norway, UK & NL
Dubai & the Middle East (UAE, Saudi, Qatar)
In Dubai and the wider Middle East, NEBOSH IGC and offshore experience
are often hard requirements for HSE roles. The combination of large projects,
tax-free salaries and extra benefits (housing, flights) makes this one
of the most attractive regions for ambitious HSE professionals.
- Typical contractor day rate: ± €1,300/day (indicative)
- Projects: Jebel Ali, ADNOC, offshore platforms, terminals
- Many international teams — NEBOSH is the common standard
Norway & the North Sea
In Norway and on the North Sea you'll find a mix of
traditional oil & gas and modern offshore wind. With NEBOSH IGC you increase your
chances of well-paid HSE roles on platforms and vessels.
- Indicative day rate: ± €1,200/day
- Projects: Equinor, Aker BP, offshore wind farms
- Strong focus on safety, procedures and compliance — NEBOSH fits perfectly
UK & North Sea (Aberdeen, North Sea hubs)
The UK has historically been one of the most important offshore markets in the world.
Many companies already work to NEBOSH standards. With an IGC certificate you have a
clear advantage when applying.
- Indicative day rate: ± €1,100/day
- Projects: BP, Shell, North Sea projects
- High demand for experienced HSE professionals with NEBOSH + offshore certificates
The Netherlands & European ports: a great starting point, lower rates
In Rotterdam, Antwerp and other European ports, rates are generally
lower than on international offshore projects, but it's an
excellent place to build experience after your NEBOSH course.
- Indicative day rate: often €400–€800/day as an HSE contractor (depending on experience)
- Ideal as a springboard to offshore or the Middle East
- Be based in Europe and build your HSE track record
From this base you can then make a targeted move into offshore or abroad.
Extra certificates often required offshore (BOSIET, Medical)
Besides NEBOSH IGC, operators almost always expect survival and medical clearance before you
step onto a platform or vessel:
- BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training) — or
FOET as the refresher
- Offshore Medical — a valid fitness-to-work certificate for the region
- GWO modules for offshore wind, and sometimes HUET
We advise which certificates are relevant for your target region so you invest in the right
sequence, not a random stack of cards.

Frequently asked questions about NEBOSH offshore
What are typical offshore HSE day rates with NEBOSH?
Offshore HSE contractor day rates commonly range from about
€500 to €1,500 per day, depending on experience, project type and region.
North Sea and UK roles often sit around €900–€1,200/day; Dubai and the wider
Middle East can reach €1,000–€1,500/day (sometimes tax-free with housing and flights).
Which extra certificates do I need besides NEBOSH (BOSIET, FOET, Offshore Medical)?
NEBOSH IGC is usually the HSE baseline. For offshore you almost always also need
BOSIET (or FOET as a refresher), a valid
Offshore Medical, and sometimes GWO for wind or
HUET. We help you build a personal certificate plan for your target region.
How do North Sea rates compare with Middle East / Dubai?
On the North Sea (Norway and the UK) indicative HSE contractor rates are often
around €900–€1,200/day, with strong process and compliance focus.
In Dubai and the Middle East, rates frequently land around
€1,000–€1,500/day, often with tax-free packages and extras such as housing and flights —
but competition and visa/logistics requirements can be different.
Can I work offshore with only a NEBOSH IGC?
Rarely on day one. NEBOSH IGC gets you through many first screenings, but operators
still expect offshore survival training, a medical and usually some relevant experience.
Without those extras you more often start in junior/medior HSE roles or
onshore port and terminal work, then progress offshore once certificates and experience are in place.
