NEBOSH vs MVK: which is better for your HSE career?

If you work in safety in the Netherlands — or are an expat moving into the Dutch HSE market — you'll quickly run into two names: NEBOSH IGC and the Dutch MVK qualification. Both are serious credentials, but they differ significantly in cost, recognition and international opportunities. This article compares them honestly so you can make an informed choice.

What is NEBOSH IGC?

NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) is a UK awarding body that issues health and safety qualifications worldwide. The NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) is recognised in more than 120 countries and is regarded as the international standard for HSE professionals.

At SafetyXAcademy we offer the NEBOSH IGC course for €3,500 all-in including exam fees. Our international course is taught in English, and the exam is in English too. Want to know more? Read: What is NEBOSH IGC?

What is MVK?

MVK stands for Middelbaar Veiligheidskundige — roughly "mid-level safety professional". It is a Dutch qualification aimed primarily at the Dutch labour market. MVK programmes often cost €5,000–€7,000 and are delivered entirely in Dutch (both the course and the exam).

MVK is well known in the Netherlands and, to a limited extent, in Belgium. For international projects or offshore assignments it is often not enough, because clients explicitly ask for NEBOSH.

Cost comparison: NEBOSH vs MVK

At first glance NEBOSH IGC looks cheaper than MVK. At SafetyXAcademy the NEBOSH IGC course costs €3,500 all-in, while MVK programmes often cost €5,000–€7,000. That's a difference of €1,500–€3,500.

NEBOSH IGC: €3,500 all-in (including exam fees, study material, tuition)
MVK: €5,000–€7,000 (depending on provider and programme)

But cost isn't the only difference. More important: what do you get for your money? With NEBOSH IGC you can work in 120+ countries; with MVK mainly in the Netherlands. For international careers or offshore assignments, NEBOSH is therefore often the better investment.

Recognition and international opportunities

This is where the biggest difference lies between NEBOSH and MVK:

NEBOSH IGC:

  • Recognised in 120+ countries worldwide
  • Required for many offshore assignments (Norway, UK, North Sea)
  • Required for international projects (Dubai, KSA, Singapore)
  • In high demand in international ports and industry
  • Exam in English (and our international course is taught in English)

Note: the NEBOSH IGC exam changed to an open-book system in 2026. Read here exactly what's changing for you.

MVK:

  • Recognised in the Netherlands (and to a limited extent in Belgium)
  • Sufficient for Dutch HSE roles
  • Not sufficient for international/offshore projects
  • Course and exam entirely in Dutch

Which choice suits you?

The choice between NEBOSH and MVK mostly depends on your career goals:

Choose NEBOSH IGC if you:

  • Want to work internationally (ports, offshore, Dubai, Norway, UK)
  • Want higher day rates as a contractor (€600–€1,500 per day)
  • Want to invest less but get more options (€3,500 vs €5,000–€7,000)
  • Want offshore assignments or international projects
  • Are an expat who wants a qualification that travels beyond the Netherlands

Choose MVK if you:

  • Only want to work within the Netherlands
  • Have no international ambitions
  • Prefer a fully Dutch-language course and exam
  • Work for a Dutch employer that explicitly asks for MVK

Conclusion: NEBOSH is the smarter choice for international careers

For most HSE professionals who want to build an international career, NEBOSH IGC is the smarter choice. It's cheaper (€3,500 vs €5,000–€7,000), gives access to 120+ countries and is required for many offshore and international assignments. MVK is mainly suitable if you want to work exclusively within the Netherlands.
